Alexander Small is Herman & Wells’ Director of Operations & HR, a key leadership role created to support the firm’s continued growth and commitment to excellence.
Alex oversees the business operations of the firm, managing everything behind the scenes that allows our attorneys to focus fully on serving clients. From hiring and HR to payroll, purchasing, accounting support, vendor relationships, and process development, he ensures that the firm runs efficiently, strategically, and in alignment with its mission. He also leads the development of internal systems and standard operating procedures designed to improve workflow, strengthen culture, and reduce stress across the organization.
With more than a decade of executive-level operational leadership experience across manufacturing, retail, healthcare staffing, and service industries, Alex brings a results-driven approach to building high-performance teams and optimizing systems. He has successfully managed cross-functional teams, implemented KPIs, negotiated vendor contracts, and led multi-location operations. His background includes directing large-scale production facilities, overseeing seven-figure budgets, and driving measurable growth and efficiency improvements.
Alex holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of South Florida and is Six Sigma certified. He is also a graduate of the Contractor Nation School of Entrepreneurship and has been recognized with the North Tampa Chamber of Commerce Innovation Award and a Connected Leadership Award.
Originally from Syracuse, New York, Alex has been a Florida resident for over 20 years. Outside the office, he enjoys golfing (even if he says he’s not very good), cheering on the Buffalo Bills, and spending time with his wife and their young daughter.
Alex’s mission is simple but powerful: build a strong culture, create efficient systems, and make life easier for the team so they can continue delivering exceptional service to every client. His work helps support the attorneys and staff who assist clients with matters involving personal injury claims, insurance disputes, construction defect litigation, and disability disputes. By ensuring the firm operates efficiently behind the scenes, Alex plays an important role in helping the firm provide responsive, client-focused representation across all of its practice areas.
